The Stockholm Museum of Architecture, officially known as ArkDes (Arkitektur- och Designcentrum), is a museum specializing in architecture and design. Located on Skeppsholmen Island in the heart of Stockholm, its mission is to provide a forum for exploring and discussing innovative ideas in architecture and design, while preserving and showcasing Swedish architectural heritage.
The permanent exhibition features the museum's collection of Swedish architecture, including drawings, models, photographs, and archives that document the history of architecture in Sweden. It offers a comprehensive overview of architectural styles, landmark projects, and influential architects who have shaped the Swedish architectural landscape. The exhibition portrays the evolution of Swedish architecture over time and also helps to understand the issues, recurring forms, and how external and foreign influences have evolved Swedish architecture while retaining its local specificity over more than 1,000 years (from the Vikings to the present day).
The structure known here as Boxen (the Box), located in the museum's large hall, hosts more alternative exhibitions that can also inspire classical architecture. This structure was built in 2019 by the Swedish architectural firm Dehlin Brattgård, which designed a metal structure that, through its interior and exterior architecture, creates two distinct exhibition environments: a white box inside and a ramp around it for circulation.
The museum building itself is an interesting example of contemporary architecture. It was designed to be a functional and flexible space, with modular exhibition areas and interactive installations. The museum also offers a pleasant view of the harbor and the city of Stockholm, enhancing the visitor experience.
