This guided tour of the Old Town (Gamla Stan) will allow you to explore the three small islands (Stadsholmen, Riddarholmen, and Helgeandsholmen) that make up this historic area and form the geographic and historical heart of Stockholm. This is where it all began, around the year 1252, between the shores of the Baltic Sea and the impressive Lake Mälaren. From this point, the city gradually expanded and established itself as one of the major cities in Scandinavia.
The medieval quarter (Gamla Stan), which we will traverse and which still bears traces of the past, will give you a glimpse into the Stockholm (and Sweden) of yesteryear.
During this approximately two-hour guided tour of Gamla Stan, we will discover the Royal Palace, the Cathedral, the Great Square, and the ancient shopping street—some of the symbolic locations of Gamla Stan, which means “Old Town” in Swedish.
Our walk will lead us step by step through a rich history embedded in this maze of cobblestone streets, and will also offer anecdotes and curiosities related to traditions, as well as information about Swedish lifestyle and contemporary Swedish society. We will then walk to the Knights’ Island (Riddarholmen) to admire, among other things, one of the most suggestive panoramas of the city. Finally, we will conclude the walk on the island of Helgeandsholmen (the Island of the Holy Spirit), where the Swedish Parliament is located, close to the northern façade of the Royal Palace.
Optional visit to the Great Church (Cathedral) is available. Choose the 2.5-hour option in the form in this case.
