Dive into the unique world of Astrid Lindgren, one of Sweden's most beloved children's authors and the creator of memorable characters such as Pippi Longstocking (Pippi Långstrump) and Emil of Lönneberga among many others. This guided tour will take you to the iconic locations in her neighborhood, Vasastan, that shaped the life of this visionary author and inspired her famous stories.
Astrid Lindgren was originally from Småland, a region in southern Sweden, but she spent most of her life in Stockholm. She moved there at the age of 18 in 1926, and she and her family moved into the apartment at 46 Dalagatan on September 22, 1941. She lived there for over 60 years and passed away at her home on January 28, 2002.
It is only natural that we will begin our tour in front of this apartment to set the scene before we explore this charmingly architected neighborhood, which is the source of famous anecdotes about the author's life and a wellspring of literary inspiration.
We will then continue to the famous Vasaparken, a popular spot among locals and also a source of inspiration for Astrid Lindgren. Some characters were born from observing children play in this lush park, and she herself broke her leg slipping on a patch of ice.
We will end the tour at Tegnerlund, a small park located in a neighborhood of Stockholm where Astrid Lindgren lived for many years, and where a commemorative statue now stands. The statue depicts Astrid Lindgren in a thoughtful pose, often described as contemplative, holding a book. It embodies the spirit of writing and the love of literature that marked her career.
