Located in the main square of the old town (Stortorget), the Nobel Museum traces the history of the Nobel Prizes, highlighting the achievements of scientists, writers, and peace activists who have left their mark on humanity, along with the story of this prestigious award.
From the very entrance, a powerful visual immediately introduces you to the heart of the museum: suspended from the ceiling, a pulley carries portraits of Nobel laureates across the museum, showcasing the prize’s recipients since its inception in 1901—a visual touch symbolizing the prestige of the Nobel Prizes.
Our visit begins with the permanent exhibit on Alfred Nobel’s life, his scientific achievements, and the creation of the award that bears his name. We’ll explore the journey of this remarkable man, his discoveries, his setbacks, and the testament in which he carefully outlined the organization, institutions, and processes for awarding the prize. We will then move through the museum to learn about the Nobel Prize ceremony, the banquet, the various Nobel medals, and other significant aspects of the Nobel Foundation.
We’ll conclude with a closer look at some of the laureates and their groundbreaking discoveries in different fields, along with personal items that former laureates donated to the museum, some directly tied to the reason for their prize and others more abstractly symbolic.
Visitors are welcome to stay after the tour to enjoy the multimedia installations, where they can listen to Nobel speeches, explore archives, and test their knowledge with interactive quizzes. Inside the museum, the Bistro Nobel offers a cozy spot to sample Swedish dishes and desserts. Visitors can also flip their chair over to find the signatures of Nobel laureates who visited this iconic place. Finally, the museum shop offers a range of exclusive souvenirs, including books, educational games, and items inspired by the laureates’ work.
